44 Knots: SSW is the resulting body of work made while undertaking an Artist Residency at the Pickers Hut in Tasmania, 2019. The series is comprised of (20) works on paper which create a visual documentation of the recorded wind speeds over each day of the residency.
My practice explores landscape from both an anthropological and ontological viewpoint. Imbedding the work with the experience of being in the landscape, is integral to my process. Organic materials obtained from the site are integrated into my work. The illustrative components my work, are expressive of recurring patterns found within the landscape.
Using elements of the site, I became a collaborator with Place. In this case it was using the wind and rain of the Huon Valley on the paper as the ink was drying, to capture not only the movement but feeling of Tasmania’s ever present, wind and wild skies.
Hand drawn marks serve to bring my own personal experience of the site into the work. The minimalist palette is indicative of the steely skies and thick cloud formations in the southern part of the state.
My goal is to connect to landscape, and to the dynamic of Place; exploring how that site is being changed by forces, both natural and otherwise.
The Pickers Hut Artist Residency is run by Artist, Matt Calvert at his studio in Southern Tasmania. I undertook this residency as part of an Independent Unit of study, in the Bachelor of Art and Design degree at Southern Cross University.
